The Department of Human Services announced SNAP benefits that would normally expire in March, April, or May will now be extended six months.
In April, Illinois will get an additional $80 million in federal funds for SNAP.
DHS said this will make a huge impact.
For example, before the pandemic, a single person with a disability or an older adult with a $2,000 monthly income would receive $16 in benefits.
Now, they are eligible for around $200.
“We’ve also been able to waive the physical presence requirements for SNAP applicants and participants, enabling people to further reduce the time they spend outside their homes and increase people’s ability to apply for assistance online,” Gov. JB Pritzker said.
